Investigating Classroom Interaction through Conversation Analysis A Colloquium for PhD students and new researchers/post-docs in Education Sciences
The Department of Education Sciences at European University Cyprus is organising an online Colloquium for PhD students and new researchers/post-docs on Conversation Analysis and its application to classroom interaction, delivered by Dr Daniela Veronesi as part of the SUNRISE European University Alliance. The seminar supports the Department’s commitment to doctoral research and methodological training, offering participants opportunities for dialogue and exchange with international scholars. SUNRISE brings together nine European universities to advance education, collaborative research and mobility, with a focus on regional innovation and sustainable development.
The two-hour seminar is designed for doctoral students in Education Sciences and introduces Conversation Analysis (Sidnell & Stivers, 2013) as a theoretical and methodological approach to the study of social interaction.
Following an overview of key concepts that includes turn-taking, repair, sequence organisation and preference organisation, the seminar will examine the differences between ordinary conversation and institutional interaction, with classroom communication as its central focus.
Topics will include turn allocation, teachers’ questions and their linguistic forms, teachers’ corrections, and students’ participation in whole-class and peer interaction. Participants will work in pairs or small groups to analyse authentic audio and video recordings, drawn primarily from primary school settings, before sharing their observations in a plenary discussion.

Optional follow-up session
An additional one-hour session will offer participants an opportunity to explore further applications of Conversation Analysis to classroom research. Drawing on studies of multimodal cooperation among children, directness and indirectness, and peer error correction, the session will also address methodological questions concerning the analysis of audio- and video-recorded interaction.

About the speaker
Dr Daniela Veronesi is Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the Faculty of Education of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy. Her research examines social interaction through Conversation Analysis and interactional linguistics, with a particular focus on multimodality in primary education and musical settings.
Her work on talk-in-interaction also encompasses multilingual communication, language biographies, radio interviews conducted in Italian as a second language, and non-professional language mediation.
