From Ideas to Impact: 55 Students Take Centre Stage at EUC’s SUNRISE Startup Summer School

Five days. Eight countries. Fifty-five students. One shared ambition: to turn bold ideas into promising start-ups.

Nicosia, Cyprus – July 2026 – European University Cyprus became a vibrant hub of creativity, collaboration and entrepreneurial energy as it hosted the BIP EUC Startup Academy & Competition: Summer School for Future Founders, from 6 to 10 July 2026.

Organised within the framework of the SUNRISE European Universities Alliance and co-funded by the European Union, the Summer School welcomed 55 students from eight European countries for an intensive five-day journey from the first spark of an idea to the excitement of a final start-up pitch.

From day one, the participants were challenged to think differently. Working in international and interdisciplinary teams, they identified real-world problems, explored new opportunities and began transforming their ideas into practical and potentially impactful business solutions.

The mission was clear: learn, create, connect and pitch.

Throughout the week, the students developed and refined their start-up concepts, identified their target audiences, shaped their value propositions and explored the feasibility, business model and market potential of their solutions. Supported by mentors, entrepreneurs, academics and innovation experts, they moved beyond theory and experienced first-hand what it takes to develop an idea into a convincing start-up concept.

The programme featured a dynamic mix of hands-on workshops, inspirational entrepreneurial stories and practical mentoring. Sessions explored topics such as AI-supported rapid prototyping, the Business Model Canvas, customer and market validation, cybersecurity entrepreneurship, circular economy business models, start-up development and effective pitching.

Students also heard directly from founders and professionals who shared the realities of building a start-up—including the challenges, mistakes, lessons and breakthroughs that shape the entrepreneurial journey. The message throughout the week was simple: successful start-ups are not built on ideas alone, but through teamwork, validation, persistence and the courage to keep improving.

The learning experience extended well beyond the classroom. Participants visited the IDEA Innovation Centre – Bank of Cyprus, where they gained insight into Cyprus’s growing start-up ecosystem and met teams pursuing their own entrepreneurial ambitions. A guided tour of Nicosia and a seaside excursion also gave participants the chance to discover Cyprus, build friendships and strengthen connections across cultures.

The week reached its exciting conclusion with the SUNRISE Start-up Competition. After days of brainstorming, testing, mentoring and rehearsing, each team stepped onto the stage to deliver a five-minute pitch before the judging panel.

The students presented their business ideas, target markets, value propositions and potential impact, competing on innovation, feasibility, market potential, teamwork, communication and future growth prospects. The strongest teams were awarded prizes, while all participants celebrated the completion of an intensive week of learning and collaboration.

More than a Summer School, the initiative created a space where students from different countries, disciplines and backgrounds could challenge one another, exchange perspectives and discover the power of entrepreneurship as a tool for positive change.

Through the BIP EUC Startup Academy & Competition: Summer School for Future Founders, European University Cyprus continues to promote entrepreneurship, international mobility and collaboration while empowering students to transform their creativity into solutions with real-world potential.
