The Smaller (Strategic) Universities Network for Regional Innovative and Sustainable Evolution (SUNRISE) officially launched its mission with a vibrant kick-off meeting on January 14-15, 2025, hosted by Technische Universität Ilmenau in Germany. This gathering brought together representatives from diverse universities, united by a shared vision of fostering innovation and sustainability through collaboration. 

The two-day event was an inspiring start to what promises to be a dynamic and impactful initiative. The opening ceremony set the tone, highlighting the collective commitment to addressing regional challenges through strategic partnerships. Collaborative meetings followed, where participants established shared goals, developed workplans, and formalized the Steering Committee, Execution Leadership, and International Student Council. These efforts emphasized inclusivity and teamwork, ensuring all voices within the SUNRISE community contribute to its direction. 

A highlight of the program was the opportunity for attendees to explore TU Ilmenau’s campus, faculties, and state-of-the-art laboratories. These tours showcased the innovative environments where research and ideas thrive, inspiring participants to envision future collaborations. 

The meeting culminated in a meaningful cultural event in Erfurt, Thuringia’s capital, where participants bonded while exploring the historic old town and UNESCO World Heritage Site Old Synagogue. The evening’s activities reinforced the network’s values of community and shared heritage, underscoring the importance of connecting beyond formal discussions. 

As the SUNRISE community moves forward, the connections and shared understanding forged during these two days will serve as a strong foundation for the work ahead. Together, SUNRISE member universities are poised to make a lasting impact on regional development, innovation, and sustainability—embodying the power of collaboration in action. 

The SUNRISE journey has begun, with a shared commitment to driving positive change as a united community.
